The Fine Art Society was founded in 1876. The gallery still occupies the original building at 148 New Bond Street.

The Fine Art Society specialises in the work of British artists from 1750 to the present and sells paintings, sculpture, watercolours, prints, drawings, architect-designed furniture, metalwork, ceramics and glass.

The Fine Art Society staged the ground-breaking exhibition of Whistler’s Venice Etchings Arrangement in White and Yellow in 1883. John Ruskin’s collection of Turner watercolours were displayed in 1878 and the first show of the work of Samuel Palmer was mounted at the gallery in 1881. These and many other major British artists and designers such as Bonington, Sickert, Nash, Nicholson, Sutherland, Dresser and Mackintosh continue to be the subjects of exhibitions at the gallery.
