The Origins of Pigment

Colour is a key component of a work of art, with specific hues selected for their decorative, symbolical or emotive qualities, but the properties and potential of pigments themselves - those ingredients bound together to form coloured paint or glaze - are sometimes overlooked in our age of standardised materials. Our panel illuminates the materiality of pigment from the point of view of the creator, the conservator and the curator.

Corrie Jackson
Corrie Jackson is a Curator based in Toronto, Canada.  She is currently the Royal Bank of Canada Senior Curator, having joined RBC in 2014, overseeing the management and strategy of the RBC Corporate Art Collection. Previ­ously she worked at the University of Toronto Art Museum, Sotheby’s Canada, commercial galleries, and as an independent curator. She finished her Masters in Visual Studies, Curatorial Practice at the University of Toronto with a focus on contemporary Canadian artists. Her curatorial interests focus on cross-generational dialogues and developing the role of collections as accountable and inclusive narratives.

Larry Keith
Larry Keith is the Head of Conservation and Keeper at the National Gallery London, and has managerial responsibility for Art Handling, Framing and Collection Registrars. His work is the conservation, restoration and technical study of Old Master paintings, working in collaboration with colleagues from the Gallery’s Scientific and Curatorial Departments. He received a post-graduate diploma in the conservation of easel paintings from the Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, following a BA in Art History from Oberlin College. He joined the National Gallery in 1991 after working with Hebert Lank in London and John Brealey at the Metropolitan Museum.

Kate Malone MBE
Kate Malone MBE is one of the UK’s leading ceramic artists with an illustrious career spanning over thirty years. ‘Inspired by the optimism and joy in nature’, her highly-coloured, natural forms brim with a sense of growth and abundance, and aim to communicate the 'Life Force' to the viewer. In 2019 Malone was awarded an MBE for her for services to ceramic art in the 2019 Birthday Honours. She is a patron of the Clay College, Stoke-on-Trent, Ambassador for The Geoffrey Museum, and often speaks publicly of her belief in the benefits of maintaining craft making in schools as part of a basic education for every child.

Susan Moore
An art historian, art critic and saleroom correspondent, Susan Moore has written columns for the Financial Times, the Spectator, and the London Evening Standard and is Associate Editor of Apollo. She founded the not-for-profit Slow Art Workshop in 2017 and is currently writing a biography of the collector Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza.
