Everard Read
Established in 1913 Everard Read is one of the world's oldest commercial art galleries. The gallery specialises in art from South Africa and today we have art galleries in London, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Franschhoek.

For Masterpiece 2022, Everard Read presents The Planet Earth Collection by internationally acclaimed artist, John Meyer.

Meyer has spent his life observing and celebrating the landscapes, skies and seas of this world through his work. In his travels, he has witnessed the insidious and seemingly inexorable alterations to nature caused by human activity. Meyer felt helpless yet outraged. He spent two years utterly immersed in creating a body of work that he hopes will be a monument to the intoxicating grandeur of places and habitats that will diminish and finally die if we humans continue with business as usual.

This collection of 18 new paintings is a poignant love poem to planet earth, one which Meyer has been writing in increments for more than half a century, and which has culminated in these soaring vistas that capture the magnitude and wonder of the natural world as well as the built environment. Meyer’s paintings illuminate the majesty and ephemeral beauty of Antarctica and the Amazon, the Maasai Mara Plains, Patagonia and the Norwegian fjords, presenting his - and perhaps our - memory of landscape, and how it feels, or might feel, to be in these places.

Meyer’s love of paint is at the heart of his enduring prominence as an artist. The magical properties of paint and his ability to conjure nuances with it - the way the light falls on a landscape, illuminating and spotlighting our mysterious world - is at the heart of his preoccupation with painting. This has haunted, inspired and propelled him as an artist for five decades.

The Planet Earth Collection is John Meyer’s offering: an attempt both to record his awe in the face of the sublime as well as offer up a bright red flag about its future.

Built in 1710 on the site of a Tudor farmstead, the present house at Riverhill has been the ancestral home of the Rogers family for almost two centuries. Known for its beautiful and historic gardens and expansive views across the Weald of Kent, Riverhill was shortlisted for the Historic House Association Garden of the Year Award in 2021 and provides an idyllic natural setting for engaging with sculpture.

Everard Read will curate an exhibition to include bronze sculpture by celebrated South African artists Beezy Bailey, Deborah Bell, Guy du Toit, Speelman Mahlangu, Lionel Smit, and Florian Wozniak as well as work by British artist, Olivia Musgrave. The exhibition will showcase monumental as well as mid-scale sculpture to be presented across the gardens including the Walled Garden and amphitheatre, the Rose Walk and the Terraces.

Both Everard Read and Riverhill share a long history as family-run businesses. Established in 1913 in Johannesburg, Everard Read is among the oldest commercial art galleries in the world with exhibition spaces in London, Johannesburg, Cape Town and in the winelands of Franschhoek. This outdoor sculpture exhibition continues the gallery’s practice of presenting sculpture in spectacular landscapes where they can be appreciated in a natural setting.

Riverhill Gardens is open seasonally from 10th March to 30th October, Wednesday to Sunday (inclusive) and Bank Holidays from 9am - 5pm (last entry at 3pm.)
