Pangolin London
Pangolin London is one of the city’s few galleries dedicated to exhibiting sculpture and is affiliated with Europe’s largest sculpture foundry Pangolin Editions. Since opening in 2008 in up-and-coming King’s Cross, the gallery has continued to deliver a rotating exhibition programme of both Modern British and Contemporary Sculpture. In addition to the exhibitions in the gallery, Pangolin London also curates a changing exhibition of large scale sculpture throughout the public spaces and canal-side at Kings Place as well as holding talks and lectures to coincide with exhibitions. Pangolin London also publish scholarly books and catalogues on sculpture.

Breon O'Casey: Painting is Another Language

Pangolin London are delighted to present a new exhibition of paintings and prints - many never seen before - by prominent St Ives artist Breon O’Casey. Bringing together the greatest number of paintings ever presented to the public, Painting is Another Language will also display some of the painter’s early works. 
As the son of Irish playwright Sean O’Casey whose passion for visual art almost led him to become a painter himself, Breon O’Casey grew up surrounded by art in an environment which gave him the impression that he ‘[shared] a house with Matisse’. Consequently, Breon began to paint at a young age and often used his family as models, as shown in the photograph below, taken by famous photographer Gjon Mili, of a young O’Casey painting his sister Shivaun reading in the early 1950s.
Known for his wide-reaching style that encompassed both the figurative and the abstract, Breon O’Casey’s work is founded on a series of repetitive motifs; from simple, bold images of birds and hills reminiscent of Braque and Matisse, to his use of colourful triangles, spirals and polka dots in constructing landscapes rich with emotion. Occasionally, O’Casey drew inspiration from literature or mythology – for example, his Leda and the Swan paintings or his Three Graces, which are shown here together for first time. 
Breon O’Casey studied at Dartington Art School, where he was taught by the influential artist Naum Slutzky, a Russian-Jewish refugee and former head of metalwork at the Bauhaus. Between 1948 and 1950, he attended the Anglo-French Art Centre in St John’s Wood, London, and studied under tutors including Fernand Léger, André Lhote and  Germaine Richier. In 1959, he moved to St Ives after watching a television programme about Alfred Wallis’ life in Cornwall. 
Soon after he arrived at St Ives, he became a part-time assistant to Denis Mitchell and then to Dame Barbara Hepworth, before rising to prominence as an influential member of the School of St Ives. O’Casey became accomplished at working in a wide range of media: painting, weaving, jewellery, printmaking - and later in life, sculpture.
Painting is Another Language will present an original selection of paintings, prints and jewellery from the artist’s estate which is now represented by Pangolin London. 


Antonia Salmon: Nature as Designer

Antonia Salmon has worked as a ceramic artist since 1984, developing a strong interest in making ceramic sculptures that have a purity of line and form. The processes of hand burnishing the surfaces and smoke firing the finished pieces imbue the work with subtle depth, so that the works appear timeless, contemplative and poised.
Antonia was brought up in a home dedicated to architecture and the visual arts. Her training in Geography at Sheffield University gave her a deep understanding of landform and environmental processes. Subsequent training in studio pottery at Harrow School of Art, combined her passion for landscape with her interest in art making. After travelling and painting in the Middle East and India Antonia set up her first workshop, in the Barbican Arts Group, London. From 1989 Antonia returned to Sheffield from where she has worked ever since; exhibiting and lecturing in Britain, and internationally.
Antonia’s aim is to create sculptures that express the movement, sound and stillness of the natural world. She spends a lot of time immersing herself in her nearby landscape of dales and moorlands, deriving inspiration from landforms and found objects, such a bones, stones, tools, wood and lichens, and the experience of listening to wind and water.
Her work is represented in private and public collections throughout the UK, Europe, USA, Japan and China. She is on the Crafts Council Selected Register of Craftspeople, and Fellow of CPA.


Merete Rasmussen: Expansion

Pangolin London are delighted to present a brand-new body of work from celebrated ceramic sculptor Merete Rasmussen. The culmination of two years of experimentation, Merete Rasmussen: Expansion charts new horizons in Rasmussen’s work as the artist plays with the expansion of space in both her signature ceramics as well as works in bronze and silver.
